Goals are ineffective without deadlines

– The amount of time it takes to complete a task will expand to fill the amount of time you have to complete that task. So if you’re given a work deadline, this needs to be on my desk 5:00 p.m. Friday. What time does it hit their desk?

– [Woman] 5:00 p.m. Friday?

– Exactly, yeah. What if they were to say this exact same document, exact same job has to be on my desk at 3:30 this afternoon, Tuesday? What time does it get there?

– [Woman] Tuesday.

– Yeah, you have a school assignment due in a month. When’s it going to be in? In a month, yeah? If that same assignment was due tomorrow, it would be done tomorrow to the same standard. The amount of time it takes to complete a task expands to fill the amount of time we have available to complete that task. So if you can put little artificial deadlines on yourself, you can suddenly become really, really highly productive. The same thing applies to your.
