Range of Motion at the WA Strongman Second Qualifier

July 23, 2012

“Regularly learn and play new sports” Strongman Qualifier.

Steve Bray summarises Range of Motion’s performance and       experience at the WA Strongman Second Qualifier:

Recently, myself and five other Range Of Motion athletes attacked head on our very first Strongman competition. This was an AWESOME event, a lot different to a CrossFit competition. Basically it was a bunch of strong blokes and chicks getting together to see who could lift the heaviest thing.

Awesome atmosphere with the DJ blasting tunes over the loud speaker, and a great venue I would like to thank CrossFit armed for hosting us and Strongman WA for putting on the event.

We competed in 4 events, in order they went yoke carry, Log Press, deadlift and then farmers carry. A yoke is basically a big steel frame where you can add weight onto each corner (if you like) and walk with it on your back; in this event you had to take the heaviest weight you could 15 metres in 60 seconds or less. The log press is like a big round barbell that you have to get from the ground to overhead anyway possible much harder than a log press. Deadlift, our basic deadlift pick the weight up and put it down and the farmers carry is two massive weights that you load up in your hands and walk for 25 metres.

Our results:

Yoke Carry:

  • Dawn Gregson -155kgs -15 metres in 29.3 seconds
  • Vanessa Letts – 140kgs-15 metres in 20.4 seconds
  • David Flemming- 150kgs-15 metres in 17.4 seconds
  • Aaron Bremer-205kgs-15 metres in ~23-24 seconds
  • Steve Bray- 240kgs-15metres in 41 seconds

Log press:

  • Dawn Gregson- 45kg
  • Vanessa Letts- 40kgs
  • David Flemming-55kgs
  • Aaron Bremer – 70kg
  • Steve Bray- 80kgs

Deadlift:

  • Dawn Gregson- 110kgs (official)
  • Vanessa Letts- 95kgs
  • David Flemming-125kgs
  • Aaron Bremer- 185kgs
  • Steve Bray- 190kgs

Farmers carry (per hand):

  • Dawn Gregson- 60kgs-25 metres in 14 seconds
  • Vanessa Letts – 50kgs-25 metres in 10 seconds
  • David Flemming-60kgs-25 metres in 19.3
  • Aaron Bremer- 100kgs-25 metres (unsure of final time)
  • Steve Bray- 110kgs-25 metres in 21-22seconds

My highlights of the day include:

  • Dawn feeling strong after her final deadlift so she did another deadlift after the event to hit a new PB of 112.5kg Congrats Dawn.
  • Vanessa hitting 95kgs NEW PB was an awesome lift. That 100kgs is coming soon!!
  • Aaron jumping from 175-185 to hit a new PB by 10kgs that’s HUGE.
  • David Flemming hitting every single attempt of the day! No failed attempts and definitely has a greater capacity to lift more next time.
  • David being the oldest competitor and me being the youngest competitor, goes to show our diversity as a group always willing to go hard!
  • Me being one of three other guys in the under 80kgs category to farmers carry 110kgs. This felt good considering I don’t train specifically for strongman competitions.
  • The all-around camaraderie and support from everyone at the event!
  • The option to add bacon and egg into my steak burger for only an extra dollar.
  • And of course the best part of the day for me and every other Rommer, Dawn “Dawnie G” Gregson finishing on the podium!!! A 3rd place finish from Dawn! That was super cool seeing dawn up there at the end of the day. Congrats Dawn!

All in all it was an awesome day and I would like to thank, Daniel Macri, CrossFit Armed, strongman WA and everyone else who helped out. When is the next one?
