Fall prevention in the elderly is a big one. Falls = inability to exercise = falls. Viscous cycle.
A fall occurs when the centre of gravity moves outside the base of support. The way to increase the base of support and bring the centre of gravity back inside is to take a step. This can be trained.
Again, VERY CAREFULLY, complete this exercise. Stand behind your subject/victim and gently push them. They should respond by activating muscles in their ankles, legs and hips to resist the push. Push them forward, side to side and backwards. Now gradually increase the force until they are forced to take a step. This is referred to as a ‘step strategy’.
In this way, we are able to train people to resist a fall.
